When is taxi demand highest in Brussels?

Ask ten Brussels drivers when the best time to work is and you'll get ten answers. Friday night. Sunday evening at the airport. Any time it rains.
They're all partly right. So we looked at the data.
Between 25 June and 16 September 2026, taxi companies using Tomcabs recorded 10,512 completed rides in Brussels. This article shows when those rides happened, then adds what we know about the airport, nightlife, events, holidays and the weather.
What the data covers
A bit of honesty first, because it changes how you should read the numbers.
- These are recorded rides, not total demand. They show when Tomcabs fleets carried passengers, not every ride in the city, and not the rides nobody was available to take.
- The period is 12 weeks of summer, school holidays included. Autumn and winter will look different.
- Times are ride start times, in local time.
- Pickup zones are based on the 73% of rides with a GPS location inside the 19 Brussels communes. Airport pickups fall outside that area, so they don't appear in the zone results.
- We only publish aggregates. No company, driver, passenger or address can be identified.
Demand peaks in the late afternoon
The busiest hour of the day was 16:00, with 656 rides over the period. The three hours from 15:00 to 18:00 alone accounted for 17.6% of all rides.

A few things stand out.
- The afternoon is the core. Between midday and 18:00, Brussels taxis carried almost a third of all rides.
- The evening dips before the night picks up. 21:00 was the quietest hour of the whole day, with 293 rides. By 01:00, volume was back up to 470, more than at 08:00.
- The night matters. Nearly a quarter of all rides started between midnight and 6:00, when most public transport has stopped.
- Early morning is quiet too. 06:00 recorded 306 rides, less than half of the 16:00 peak.
Saturday leads, Tuesday trails
Demand builds through the week. Saturday recorded 27% more rides than Tuesday, the quietest day. Sunday stays strong.
The gap between days is smaller than many managers expect. The hour matters more than the day: 16:00 carried more than twice as many rides as 21:00, while Saturday was only about a quarter busier than Tuesday.
Where pickups happen
Among rides with a mapped pickup, the most frequent zones were the City Centre, Saint-Gilles and Schaerbeek. That matches what drivers already know: dense neighbourhoods, the main stations close by, and much of the city's nightlife.
What moves demand beyond the clock
The airport
Brussels Airport handled 24.4 million passengers in 2025, 3.3% more than in 2024. Summer is the high season: in August 2026, the airport welcomed 2,521,985 passengers, bringing summer 2026 to 5.1 million travellers.
December is the other peak to plan for. In December 2025, 1,843,000 passengers used the airport, up 3.9% on the year before, pushed by the start of the Christmas holidays.
Airport runs are long and valuable, but they often mean an empty drive back. Keep an eye on your paid vs unpaid kilometres on those days.
Nightlife
The Brussels metro stops running around midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights, STIB runs Noctis night buses from midnight to 3:00, with departures every 20 to 30 minutes from Gare Centrale. Outside those lines and hours, a taxi is often the only way home.
The data reflects it: more rides started at 01:00 than at 08:00.
Events
Big events concentrate demand into a few hours and a few streets. Before the end of 2026, keep these in your calendar:
- 15 and 16 October: European summit, with security perimeters around the Rue de la Loi.
- 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027: Winter Wonders, the Christmas market and festivities in the city centre.
- November and December: a busy concert calendar at ING Arena, at Heysel.
Events peak at the end, not the start. People arrive over several hours, but they all leave at once.
Holidays
School holidays shift demand rather than remove it: fewer commuters, more travellers. In the French-speaking school calendar, the next breaks are:
- Autumn break: 19 to 30 October 2026
- Winter break: 21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027
Expect airport traffic to rise at the start and end of each break. Dutch-speaking schools follow a different calendar, so check both.
Weather
Rain pushes people off foot, bikes and scooters and into cars. A 2025 study of Chicago found that rain increased taxi ridership by up to 5%, while Uber and Lyft ridership rose by 22% and 19%. The authors point to surge pricing: apps pull extra drivers onto the road when it rains, and fixed-fare taxis don't get the same signal.
For taxi companies, the lesson is less about the forecast and more about supply. Rainy evenings are when having your cars on the road counts the most.
What we'd do with this
- Put your strongest shifts on the afternoon and the night. Midday to 18:00 and midnight to 3:00 carried the most rides.
- Don't overstaff 20:00 to 22:00. It was the quietest two-hour stretch of the day.
- Plan around the calendar, not the average. Summits, Winter Wonders, the start and end of school breaks and the Christmas airport peak are all known weeks in advance.
- Measure your own fleet. City-wide patterns are a starting point. Your revenue per hour by day and time tells you where your own cars actually earn.
